First Wednesday Luncheon: "The U.S. Constitution - What Were The Founders Thinking?" with Dr. John Lesher

  • Echo Lake Country Club 515 Springfield Avenue Westfield, NJ, 07090 United States (map)

As part of the Westfield Historical Society’s First Wednesday Luncheon series, The Historical Society will be presenting a talk on June 1, 2022. The speaker will be Dr. John Lesher speaking about the U.S. Constitution and what our forefathers may have been thinking throughout the process. The event will begin with check-in at 11:45 AM at the Echo Lake Country Club, located at 515 Springfield Avenue, Westfield.

The American colonists had just won a war against a major European power. Now what? Thirteen separate governments realized quickly that only by uniting could they avoid being reincorporated into a colonial outpost for Great Britain or other imperialistic nations. A viable, united government with military and economic credibility had to be organized, and The United States Constitution was the fundamental response to this need. The basic principles of American governmental structure will be reviewed with emphasis on the reasoning of the delegates to the Constitutional Convention of 1787.

John C. Lesher has worked in real estate development for over 40 years. He holds a BA in English from Scranton University, an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, a MA in history from Montclair State University, and a MA and PhD in political science from Rutgers University.

Active in community affairs, Dr. Lesher serves as treasurer of the Westfield Senior Citizens Housing Corp. and as a member of the Board of Trustees for the Echo Lake Country Club. He and his wife, Dr. Tina Lesher, have resided in Westfield for 45 years and are the parents of three children.
